Direct drive washer transmission oil

After opening and replacing a part in the transmission, I need to replace the oil. Is there a suitable replacement other than the OEM oil (which costs about $26.00 for 16oz)that Whirlpool  recommends? Would automotive transmission fluid work? Or something else?

90 weight gear oil $6 Get it at automotive parts stores
