Maytag washer spin problem
« on: February 01, 2011, 01:37:52 AM »

Washer would not spin. Found unit to have worn thrust bearing assy. Replaced thrust bearing and washer worked fine for 3  loads then would not spin. Opened lid on washer and attempted to turn tub. Tub turned approx 1/4 to 1/2 rotation then locked down. now washer is spinning properly but don't know for how long. Do yo think this could be a brake problem. Replaced brakes before but usually their was a squealing sound when the unit stopped abruptly. Also wonder if this could be a transmission problem. Any helpful advice will be greatly appreciated.

when you installed the thrust bearing kit, which washer did you use, the thick one or the thin one?

It could be a brake problem but you'll need a $100 tool to find out. Same with the tranny, only 2 more tools.

How was the spin noise prior to you doing the repairs...loud?

If you have too many washers the tub will turn during wash mode and all the clothes will be knotted to hell. If you have too few washers it won't release the tub for spin. The squealing brake can be easily fixed with WD40.
