No more new direct drives
« on: June 05, 2010, 08:59:39 PM »

Just signed up this morning for a class on the new "energy effiecient", new fangled whirlpool washers.     I understand they either have already or will very shortly be discontinuing direct drive washers.  R.I.P. 2010 for the direct drive!!!!
Without going to class,  will probably be the same as the GE profiles - no transmission,  DC motor and controller and some kind of clutch.   They probably will be very expensive to fix.    Too bad.   My recomendation will be to my customers that have them -- keep them as long as you can.   However,  I remember (Im showing my age) when they came out with the direct drive and eliminated the belt drive.   Thought the same thing.    I still am repaing belt drives to this day.   So who knows??   Comments???

I had this training this past spring . The washer looks like a cross between a cabrio and a direct drive . Forgot most of what i learned because I haven't worked on any but I do remember one part being called the splutch . They looked and felt cheap .

I also had training on this machine a few months ago.  I wasn't extremely impressed. From what I could gather, it's a plastic POS.  I guess we will see.  Whirlpool is saying what they always do.  This will be the best machine out their.

Hmmm, I think I heard that same thing at a Product Unveiling a few years back in Philly when the TL came out from Maytag!  Bahahaha.

 I guess time will tell.

I have had the training... the new machine looks good. easy to get to the part from the bottom. AC motor with a small transmission. pump with a cover that looks like it will keep thinks out of it....Hold on to the old spanner wrench....and the splutch has a small motor on it that looks like a problem.. have to get to it from the bottom....with a starting price of $269... Much better machine than cheap GEs
Check the Basics first!!! Read the Manual !!!Buy the tech a Beer!!!
