Whirlpool Dishwasher has residual water at tub bottom
« on: September 23, 2017, 01:37:59 PM »

Model Number: DU900PCDQ4
Brand: Whirlpool
Age: More than 10 years

I picked up a used Whirlpool, cleaned up my existing drain air gap and connected tubing, and did my first load last night.

The dishes and cups came out perfectly clean!

But there were three problems. The drain air gap emitted LOTS of warm water. There was a leak at the garbage disposal where the hose, which connects the garbage disposal to the air gap. The entire floor of the tub was filled with water, about 1" deep.

The garbage disposal is a few months old and has no debris or clogs.

About the small kink where the hose from the drain air gap connects to the garbage disposal. I was unable to adjust the hose or the garbage disposal to undo the kink. So I replaced the hose. In doing so, a lot of drain water came out and the tub cleared almost all the way. There are no more leaks anywhere under the sink.

However, at the very bottom of the tub around the circular center there's still some residual dirty water, even after sitting overnight (see photo).

I read that some models have this feature to lubricate the pump, but this doesn't look right to me.

What's the cause of that residual water?

Thanks!

Did you knock the plug out of the garbage disposal when you installed it? Need to knock that out. If not dw will not drain.

Yes, I knocked out the plug when I installed the garbage disposal several months ago.

Could be a problem with the hook up.
Here is  a link to a decent install sheet for all dishwashers.

Also may be a problem with the check valve balls.
Below is a link to a manual for units that are similar to yours.
There are also other power clean pump manuals here.

I am assuming the water is there right after a pump out and that it is not water siphoning back into the unit when the unit is off.

Thanks.

I also read that the food chopper screen could be clogged.  I know nothing about the history of this dishwasher.  Accessing the food chopper screen looks like a lot of work.  If I can fix this problem by, say changing hoses, does it make sense to do preventive maintenance and access/clean it, or just wait until I think it's clogged?

Thanks

If hooking it up properly fixes the problem and the unit does a good job cleaning dishes then I would leave it alone.

Also a clogged chopper filter would cause poor dish washing.
