GE combo washer/dryer spanner nut seized. Gtup270gm0ww.
« on: August 16, 2017, 02:58:43 PM »

Thing is leaking badly.   Obvious seal leak.
Have assembly out,  beat the nut (left hand thread) and it won't budge.
Never had to change one on these machines before.   I way under bid. Lol..

GE has a mechanism assembly because those things are TERRIBLE to tear down. Part # WH45X24614 for the 27" models. WH45X24615 for the 24" models

A 3 pound sledge and a cold chisel will take care of that nut in short order!

I usually use the whole kit too but sometimes have to remove the nut. If you look at the shaft the nut is on you'll notice it's basically square with the threads on the rounded corners. I use a 3/8" drill bit and drill down through the nut at one of the shaft flats. The nut is aluminum and the shaft steel so there's no harm done. However you will likely find that the pot metal bottom of the tub is probably corroded to the shaft too.

I just did one which had a seized nut(this nut has fine thread).I had to drill at a spot with more meat, after that i used a heavy screw driver to break the nut very easily.

Wow.  Okay.
So this nut has to be broken off.

If you can't remove it with the spanner wrench and a big hammer, yeah drilling and breaking the nut is your only option. The chances are pretty good that the hub of the wash basket is corroded onto the spin shaft. The basket and transmission need to be removed to replace the seal. That is why the mechanism assembly is usually the best option.

Good day to all
I have been servicing GE washers for many years and I have been using a 1/2" drive impact gun to do the job.
mine is electric not air.
also I use a 3/4" drive deep impact socket with a 1/2" drive adapter.
see picture
Have not come across any nut I could not get off yet

Have a great day

True that. I have the same in our shop and use it on the full size Hydro Wave machines. Unfortunately it doesn't help when the drum has "welded" itself to the shaft.

Why in the world would GE use pot metal in the baskets and not test them prior to putting these on the market - if the tub are seized from over heating to the shafts there no way to get them off without ruining the basket or hub? Had one last week that was literally one 2 1/2 years old and the tub seal leaked ? Really GE only 2 1/2 years old paid $1,300 dollars and this is the best you can do?? Customer was ticked ! You think GE would recall these things

I'm in a unique position in that I'm the caretaker/repair for about 6,000 GE appliances in a retirement community so I get the assembly free (sometimes) by complaining to my GE sales rep. Otherwise I wouldn't bother with these POS machines.

PS: I currently have about 100 of them!
