Is there a ring of oil inside the cabinet at the bottom, under tranny? I know you said clutch was tight, but if theres oil like described then you've most likelygot a bad transmission and it easilly could of slung oil into the brake clutch, which would slip in spin with heavy loads. Best way to check a clutch is to throw a bunch of towels in spin and see if it leaves em wet. A bad clutch may do fine with small loads. As far rust being a go or no go, that's hard to call. The tub is no loner available for that model FYI...

Hit the wrench with a hammer to loosen it.

I usually place the end of spanner wrench on end (vertically) then place end on the agitator block then take a piece of electrical tape and tape it to the shaft of transmission shaft (then the spanner wrench is standing vertically by itself with the help of electrical tape) with one hand lift the inner basket up slightly to relieve the weight - then with other hand wack the spanner wrench with the hammer (I use a 4 lb. sledge) it pops right off. Sometimes I have to wack it a couple times but that depends on how much dried up detergent is om there. The more pressure you pull up on the inner basket the easier it will pop off,  Let us know how you make out.
