Whirlpool Range Hood Fan not Working
« on: October 10, 2008, 06:34:38 AM »

Model #RH2030XJT0icon, this over the range vent hood with a basic two speed motor and single light would only make a humming noise when the fan switch was turned on. It isn't common to run a service call on these products because they are simply to inexpensive to purchase and the result is usually a replacement. But this customer didn't want to deal with un-installing the unit (especially with the tile back splash up against it) plus it matched the rest of the kitchen decor. So they decided to get it fixed.

Kitchen ventilation is usually installed above cooking appliances to aid in the removal of odors and moisture during the cooking process. Vents like this one will use one or more motors to turn fans which blow air through ducting to the outside of the home. This air movement creates a lower pressure below the hood causing the moisture and odorous air to be drawn into the vent, and usually through a filter of some kind. Because the motors are usually in the air path, they can become clogged with dust that sticks to the grease that has made it's way into the vent system. This along with moisture and often lack of use can cause the motors to slow down and eventually fail to operate.

The motor on this unit has two speeds that are operated by a double throw rocker switch on the panel. By verifying I had 120vac on each output from the switch told me the source voltage was good. That leaves the motor as the failed component. It is possible to clean motors, but in this case it was to far gone for repair. The customer opted for a new replacement motoricon and now the vent is moving air like it was new again.
