GSC23LSRBSS lights are on, nothing else
« on: May 20, 2016, 04:15:41 PM »

I went to look at the above mentioned GE fridge today.  the lights were on, but nothing else.  No fans, no compressor, nada...
the display at the top of the fridge was also out.

I thought it must be a bad main control board, WR55X10942[/size]ad,Nope.
I installed a brand new board with the same result.

I thought maybe it could be the user interface with the temp on it in the fridge, but I have never seen that one go bad.  The customer decided to buy new, but I am curious to see if anyone has seen this.

Any insight is appreciated.

I should add that I did disconnect the temp control board inside the fridge, cause I believe that will usually have it revert to 0 and 37 degrees, but it still did nothing.

Did anything run after changing the main board or was the display still blank?  If you have a shorted fan motor it will do this also. Unplug j2 and see if the compressor fires off nd display comes back.  Then figure out which motor it is.  More than likely it would be the evaporator motor.

Nothing ran with the new main board, other than the light was on.
That's interesting. I'll see if I can get back out there to check it.

Yea, I ran into this issue one time in 4 years. I found it odd too because I changed the board first as well. Tech support when I worked for Sears actually walked me through it.  Sometimes they proved useful O0

Can I just unplug j2 on the old board, or do you think it toasted the board?
Or should I put the new board in and then leave j2 unplugged.
Also, can I check for a shorted fan at j2? How?
Thanks alot!

Well you could pop the old board in and check it out first. I think on the one I did I was able to use the old board, but sometimes the fans can take out boards.

Thanks BryanS!  It was the evaporator motor.  I have never seen such a thing. I had the fan in my truck.. I have seen plenty of them go bad, but never cause the fridge to shut down like that.  No display or nothing.
I disconneted the j2 plug and it started right up.  I then reconnected it and disconnected the condensor fan.  It would not start.  Fgured it had to be the evap fan and it was.
