Whirlpool Washer Won't Spin
« on: September 19, 2008, 05:11:12 PM »

Model #LA8800XSW2icon, This unit would fill with water and agitate the clothes, but would not spin or drain the water from the tub. Looking like a classic lid switch issue, I got right to work at solving this problem.

As I mentioned in a previous post, the lid switches are used as an interlock to protect the user from injury while the washer is spinning at a rather high RPM. But unlike the newer model mentioned in the post, this older model will agitate just fine with a switch that has failed. It isn't until the timer advances to the spin and drain portion of the cycle where the open circuit to the motor results in this problem. If you compare the circuit diagrams (over simplified to reduce cluter) from each post, you should see why.

The switch on this unit didn't require to much trouble shooting because when the actuator button was pressed, there was no typical snap felt from the contacts closing. Then when the resistance check was made between the two terminals, the failure was verified. Installed a new lid switchicon in this washer and had it back up and running in no time.

One quick question...are your fingerprints always that red in blowups or have you been eating Atomic Fireballs again?  :)

Wow that was an old direct drive washer. No neutral pack needed for that baby. No pesky screws in the motor clamps either.
