Model # WTW5500SQ2
, this newer top load washer had been working fine, until the end of the last wash cycle and now the washer will only fill with water and nothing else. Even advancing the timer to another part of the cycle makes no difference, and the unit will continue to sit with water in it. This is a pretty easy fix requiring little diagnosis, but to make the information really stick, we need to take a look at the electrical circuit.
The typical Whirlpool top load washer will fill with water based on the temperature and load size selected. The size of the wash load dictates the quantity of water that will enter the tub before the wash portion of the cycle begins. The load size selector switch is a pressure switch connected to the tub via a hose. As the water level increases within the tub, the pressure from the water exerted on the pressure switch increases, until the water level selected has been met, and the position of the pressure switch contacts changes from fill to agitate. This change will open the circuit to the fill valves stopping the flow of water, and close the circuit to the motor to begin the agitation portion of the cycle.
If we take a quick look at the circuit for this washer (simplified for easier viewing) you can see on the right side of the motor, the lid switch provides the electrical path to the neutral side of the circuit once the pressure switch has changed position. If the lid switch is not closed physically or electrically, the electrical path through the motor is open and it will not operate.
After doing a quick resistance check of the lid switch, I found it to be reading an open meaning this switch was bad, part # 8318084
Replaced the switch with a new one and this new washer was back in working order.
Just a note about lid switches. Current models will use the lid switch as an interlock preventing operation after or sometimes before water fill. Older models would only prevent operation during the spin cycle so depending on the age of the washer, the symptom may change. But if you find the washer will not start after filling with water, start with the simple stuff. You can always work your way to crazy if need be.
