Whirlpool Freezer Intermittant Cooling
« on: August 14, 2008, 06:28:49 AM »

Model #EV250NXRQ03, this freezer was intermittently cooling from the day the customer took it home, but it didn't seem to have any specific pattern as to when it would work, or not. Figuring I had an easy fix at hand, I jumped in and had a look around.

Knowing where to look - or just Getting Lucky
What I found was the freezer cooling just fine upon arrival as indicated by the frozen Popsicles inside the unit, but once I closed the door, the compressor and evaporator fan shut off. Thinking this was not a coincidence, I opened the door back up and turned the thermostat to a colder setting to force everything back on, but nothing happened. My next logical place to look is the defrost timer, and that is where I found the problem. Looking at the photo above, you can just see the blue wire which leads to the thermostat loose and making a very poor connection at the defrost timer.

The connection was just loose enough to allow it to work sometimes (like after shutting the door) and not work other times (like after shutting the door). Fortunately for me and the customer, a quick repair of this harness and connector was all that was needed to have this freezer working without needed to slam the door.
