Chest freezer not getting cold
« on: November 01, 2014, 04:29:01 PM »

Kenmore model #253.9185112 (double checked- only 7 digits after the period) is not getting cold. Sorry, the wiring diagram is not present. Holding one end of a screwdriver to the compressor and the other end to my ear, I can hear the compressor humming. However, it is only drawing .5 amps. Label on the side of the freezer indicates 6 amps. The resistance of the windings seem to be okay as Common to Start + Common to Run = Start to Run and neither are shorted to the casing. The capacitor (not sure if it is a start or run capacitor) is labeled as 10 microfarads and I my meter confirms. I bypassed the cold control and after about two hours do not notice any difference in temperature. However, the compressor does seem a bit hot - I can hold my hand on it but, it is hot. Can anyone give me some advice? I'm guessing that the very small current being drawn is tell tale but, I don't know (and cannot find any reference) what it is an indication of. Thank you.

Very basic chest freezer. No fan motors manual defrost and either as a seal (system problem Freon leak),or compressor not pumping.Meaning time to buy new.

I agree with Dab..time for new freezer.  Compresor is not doing work pulling only 0.5 amp.  Probably freon has escaped.

Thank you for your reply dab147315 and Patricio.
If you don't mind -  The capacitor attached to the relay and overload is that a run or start capacitor?
