Maytag Atlantis model MAV7700AWW issues
« on: May 13, 2014, 08:46:03 AM »

Our washer is acting up and I am looking for suggestions on diagnosing the problem.

This past Sunday we had done about 5 loads of laundry. Not all large heavy loads. Just normal stuff. On the 6th load, which was somewhat heavy as it was towels, the washer filled with water but then stopped and did not agitate. It smelled hot and electrical. I tried turning it on and off with the big button but it did nothing. Also tried turning the timer knob to other cycles but again it did nothing. Unplugged it for an hour and then my wife tried it again and it ran normally. Finished the load without any further issues. She did not try running another load after that so no idea if it would have stopped again.

It has exhibited a similar issue on and off for a while but at the end of the cycle rather than the start. It will, after a few loads, often stop at the end cycle after pumping the water out. It will stop and refuse to spin the final time. Again, if we let it sit a bit then it will start up and run normally.

To me it sounds like the motor overheats and a safety overload switch kicks out. I guess the question is whether it is the motor or if something else is causing the motor to work too hard - like the transmission. I intend to open the front and see if the motor is covered in lint etc.

Advice will be appreciated.

you likely have a bad motor bearing or end of motor full of lint
