Gibson furnace won't turn on unless power is cycled first
« on: February 05, 2014, 10:05:56 AM »

This morning we woke up and noticed it was colder than normal in our house. Our digital thermostat showed a flame indicated it thought the heater was running, but nothing was coming out of the vents. I started with the easy stuff first. There is a power switch installed on the furnace so I flipped that off and back on and the furnace started right up and worked like normal. Once it got the heat up to what the thermostat was set at it shut off. Next cycle it again did not start. I replaced the batteries in the thermostat and turn it (the thermostat) off and back on. The heater started up and ran normal.

This confuses me, because I now have 2 things that temporarily fixed the issue, so 2 things I guess that could be having an issue.

Any thoughts? I am at work now so can't do any hands-on diagnostics until tonight.

What is the model number?  The furnace was probably locked out and turning off the power reset it.

If it is a newer model and has a code indicator, you could try looking at the flashes and seeing the code that appears.

If it is electronic ignition or glow plug, then you could have a bad flame sensor.  You could try to clean it with a dollar bill and see if that helps the problem.  Does it take multiple attempts to light?

It all just depends on how your furnace is set up.  Could be a couple things.
