Model Number: WTW5600XW   Brand: Whirlpool   Age: 1 - 5 years
Whirlpool Cabrio vertical modular washer, top loader, Model WTW5600XW with impeller.

Only during the WASH cycle, when the low water impeller is operational, I intermittently hear what sounds like a ratcheting noise that sounds like "uurrt, uurrt, uurrt " (say "hurt" without the "h"). It's not a grinding noise, but possibly a noise like gears not fully engaging properly.

The washer goes through the entire cycle properly, spins and drains the water normally.
Sometimes the noise will start, then stop while in the WASH cycle, and I may not hear it at all for a few weeks later.
It happens during light or heavy loads.
The impeller spins freely by hand, and the basket also turns freely.

There are no error codes when I checked them in diagnostics.

Has anyone had a similar problem with this intermittent noise? Any thoughts as where to look? I am just waiting for it to fail completely, then I should be able to find it, but I want to be prepared for this event when it does come.

Make sure the belt & the trans pulley is not rubbing the plastic cover. #20 on the picture. That Pulley has been working loose causing that noise a lot. It could still be something else but ck that 1st

Hey, JDM, you nailed it.

It turned out to be a loose pulley wheel rubbing on the pulley cover.  The belt was also off the pulley a little bit, and the pulley wheel wore down the cover somewhat.  I was able to tighten the pulley nut almost two full turns, then made sure the belt was OK.  I repaired the cover by putting a small wood brace glued to the outside of the pulley cover so the torn part would not rub against the cover.

I also did a spin speed calibration via diagnostics, and now even the loud noise I hear during the spin cycle (probably due to bearings in the motor gear box) is somewhat lower that it was in the past.

Of course, to play it safe, I also ordered the hub kit as suggested by dab, just in case, before tackling the job.  Maybe I'll hang onto it since it didn't cost too much.

Thanks again to both of you.   :thanks:
