when you push the dryer timer knob in to start it wont stay on if you let it go.  Does it need a new timer.

This is usually the centrifugal switch in the motor. It is responsible for maintaining the circuit to the motor when you release the button. It may be that the motor is pugged up with lint or that the plastic collar that slides on the motor shaft sticks and needs a shot of lubricant, but lately I find that one of the springs that holds the weights in place comes loose. Then the motor will need to be replaced.
