Title: Maytag Dependable care washer, won't spin.
Post by: ddnw on December 28, 2010, 01:09:31 AM
We bought this washer new and had ZERO problems for the 12-15 years we've had it.   The other day when switching from wash(agitate)cycle to spin mode and the belt started squealing.  I shut it off and checked some things out.  We have never changed the belts so I put a new set on, no luck.  I've read thought all the pages and have got some ideas and some great tech.

This is what I have.
-It will go through all the cycles fine, till the spin.
-It agitates fine.
-Water pump pumps fine, I used the pump twice to pump out the tub after taking off the trans drive belt.
-NO odd noises, no scraping, no grinding, no rattling, nothing.
-NO leaks, oil or water.
-I took off the trans cover, good clean oil inside, all the gears are in good shape with no teeth missing.
-I can turn the tub by hand but its pretty hard, no noises when I do that.

From what I have gathered from reading here it may be one of two things-

-Bad tub bearing.
or
-Brake stuck on, doesn't sound likely but could happen.

Any tips or other things to check, is there a good way to double check that the brake is releasing or indicators the bearing is bad.  What manual should I download, I didn't see one specific to this model.

Thanks for checking my thread, this is a great site.

Here is the service manual for the Maytag Dependable Care washer.

16010373 Maytag Dependable Care Washer Service Manual (http://appliancejunk.com/forums/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=7)

It may not list your exact model number, but the mechanical parts of all the dependable drive washer are basically the same.

Feel around inside the top of the two tubs to make sure something did not get in between the two keeping it from spinning freely.

Thanks WPT,

I pulled the top off and removed the tub cover to have a look inside, used a flashlight to shine throught the holes, nothing in between the tubs and no shadows under the inner tub so it looks like there is nothing between them.

I opperated the break by hand, it sounds like it's releasing.

After closer inspection the seal/bearing area under the tub has has some, very little, water leakage as there is some rust in around it.  Not enough to run down onto the transmition.  I may just order the seal kit and bearing kit but it looks like the spanner is out of stock.  I can make a spanner, with the nut and some reverse engineering.

Any other thoughts or ideas would be great, thanks again.

If you can see water in that area then the bearings have been getting wet. That could be making the tub harder to turn then it should be and making the noise.

Our other parts affiliate RepairClinic has the spanner wrench in stock.

Some of these appliance tools have really gone up in price over the years. Maybe we should start renting out these tools at ApplianceJunk.com :)

 Thanks a bunch gents!!

I found the video last night, saved it and watched it a few times already.  Its deffinatly the bearing, after downloading the manual I checked the brake and its working fine, while it was on its side I shot a bit of Mystery oil up under the rubber boot into the bearing area and it spun much easier.  Ordering parts in a few minutes.  Thanks for the links and all the great info!!!

Here is the repair page that goes with the video  http://appliance-repair-it.com/Maytag-tub-seal.html

The video says it all but the page may help as well.

Thanks Ryan,  I saved that yesterday, great video I watched it a few times and read the write up, it helped me with the diagnosis.

I have the parts ordered, I'll make the spanner tomorrow.  I do machine and fab work and I'm layed off for another week so this will be a quick job in the morning and then if the weather holds I'll get out a scooter and go for a ride in the afternoon.  I really appreciate the help, tech and great info here.

The manual states to use grease/lube as does the video, is that a stadard white lithium grease or something different.  I notice the agitater shaft has lithium grease on it from the factory.

Standard white lithium grease should be fine.

Got it finished and its working good as new, thank you very much.

I threw this spanner together in a hurry, its nothing fancy, I didn't have the correct size hole saw so I used the fire wrench to make the hole, I used 1/2" square stock to engauge the notches in the nuts.  The welding sucks big time, I didn't adjust the welder, just hot glued it.

This some of my handywork, I finished this last April, its a little nicer work.

Thanks again to everyone that answered.  Mama's a happy girl tonight!! 8)
