Title: Whirlpool Gold Dishwasher won't drain
Post by: flyineagle on August 23, 2009, 07:59:27 PM
I have a Whirlpool Gold d/w that will not drain. I have taken everything apart and could not find a blockages in the drain nor in the impeller or anywhere inside the dishwasher. I removed the drain (white plastic tube) coming out of the bottom and did not find anything there. I did not take this piece apart as I didn't really see anything but also, I'm afraid of breaking it while trying to take it apart. The drain line is clear, as is the plastic piece that sticks out of the top of the sink (again, I didn't take it apart as I was afraid of breaking it).  I have reassembled everything and pressed "pots/pans". Some water went in but that was it.  I then hit "cancel/drain" and a click is heard and it sounds like it wants to run, but then it clicks again and nothing. I'm not handy enough to check voltage or anything like that. Am I to the point of needing a repairman? Or is the puppy sunk? Not sure if I read the model number correctly as it is smudged/worn off. The serial number (I think) is FJ4733072. Don't know if that helps or not.  Any suggestions would be great!  Many thanks to you and your service.

Model GU940SCGB

Hello,

If you look under the dishwasher at the motor and around the motor shaft does it look like it's been leaking water? Maybe not leaking enough to get the floor wet, but just the motor?

Sounds like your motor is stuck if it's clicking out on the over load after it tries to start running.

Yes, the bottom has a build up on it. We have hard, limestone water here & it looks like  something that has been wet or exposed to moisture for awhile, with no water on the floor.  Also, I failed to mention this eariler - when the cancel/drain button is pushed and I hear a click, I then hear what sounds like an "electrical" sound like something sizzling. I have not been able to see where it is coming from, nor is there any smoke or a smell.

Many thanks!  What do I do now?

Is there a build up around the motor or motor shaft under the dishwasher?
The motor should be clean looking, if not the seal is leaking and if the seal leaks the motor will get wet. This will damaged the motor.

If the motor is clean looking and you can't find anything stuck in the pump that would keep the motor from turning I would then check the voltage to the motor. If you have 120 volts to the motor and it still does not run you would need to replace the motor.

Good evening!
I've had this thing taken apart in the inside. Should I try running something through to the drain out the bottom? The outside of the motor is covered with a buildup that looks like it has been exposed to a lot of moisture.  Haven't noticed any water on the floor - could it be such a slow leak that it would only cause the build up?

I'll take it all apart again and see if I can find anything down through the drain.

Thanks again for your help & ideas.

Updated info to Whirlpoop tech:

The correct model # is GU940SCGB (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=omv7WULuxaw&subid=&offerid=93887.1&type=10&tmpid=2111&RD_PARM1=http&RD_PARM2=%253A%252F%252Fwww.appliancepartspros&RD_PARM3=.com%252Fpartsearch%252Fmodelsearch.aspx%253Fmodel%253DGU940SCGB), serial # is FJ4733072.

Sorry for the wrong info...the # is smudged on the machine and it took some doing to figure out the correct number.

Again, thanks for your help!

Morning, AJ - finally got the cash to order a motor which came VERY fast - that was cool. Got everything taken apart and found the reason for the "sizzling" sound mentioned earlier. The plug is burnt and black - both the plug and where it goes into the motor. So, this morning I ordered the wiring harness and am looking forward to getting it just as quickly.  Any remarks or further suggestions you may have will be greatly appreciated!!

Hello again, AJ & all...replaced the motor and the wiring harness and was very careful to pull an old plug and immediately replace it with the corresponding new plug on the new harness. Dishwasher started and ran for about 10 minutes when I heard what sounded like a circuit breaker kicking off, but there are no circuit breakers in the kitchen. The dishwasher shut off immediately and now has no power whatsoever.  Nothing works and I'm left again w/ a dishwasher w/ water standing in it.  Please - any ideas?!!?!?!

There is a thermal fuse in the control console that probably blew. When you open the control panel it will be on the right hand side.

There is a thermal fuse in the control console that probably blew. When you open the control panel it will be on the right hand side.

I think this is what jumptrout51 is talking about.

Thermo Fuse (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=omv7WULuxaw&subid=&offerid=93887.1&type=10&tmpid=2111&RD_PARM1=http&RD_PARM2=%253A%252F%252Fwww.appliancepartspros&RD_PARM3=.com%252Fpart_details.aspx%253Fpart_id%253D3115186)

JW, this is a common problem I see with these.
If you click the link above you will see the new thermo fuse comes with two new leads.
This is because the old leads come loose and create a bad connection that creates heat.
The heat from the bad connection blows the thermo fuse.

This is why you need to use the new wire connections that come with the new thermo fuse.

I learned the hard way to switch the wires.

To: jumptrout51, whirlpooltech, AJ & JWWebster -  many thanks guys for the great info! It seemed there had to be a "fuse" somewhere but I had no idea where or what it could be.  I followed the link you gave me & ordered the fuse & new wires. When it gets here & I get them in I'll let yall know how it goes.

Again, many thanks for all of your help - and thanks especially for this website!  God Bless yall!

Please check the existing fuse with a ohm meter. It should read open.

Evening, folks. I don't have an ohm meter so I didn't get the fuse checked (and I had already ordered the new one before the previous post). So, the new thermal fuse & wiring came today - got it installled and still nothing. No power, no lights. I hate to give up on this since I have $200-250 in it, but don't know what else to do. Gonna check w/ appliance parts place & see if I can return the parts - ?
Any suggestions?  Many thanks!

Are you sure you have power to the dishwasher?

Take a look in the junction box were the power cord connects to the dishwasher. A wire nut may have come lose or burnt off.

I would also take a look at the door switch's.

Hey guys - me again.

The wires are connected well - actually the way this place is wired the power cord comes out of the wall from an on/off switch and then I connect them below the dishwasher (yes, the switch is "on".)  So there is juice.

What switches do I check?

Thanks again!

TO:  AJ, Whirlpool Tech, et al:

It's with a somewhat reddened face that I must say please disregard my previous post. For some reason I didn't thoroughly check the wire connection. I only looked & pulled on the wire nuts to see if the wires were loose (they weren't).  Earlier tonight (just after the post) I hit the floor & took the wire nuts completely off and retightend them.  I then tripped the breaker & flipped the on/off switch to "on", and ....... the d/w took off & completed the cycle!

So, to you guys - sorry I didn't completely follow your directions earlier.  Glad I did now. Many thanx, guys!  Appreciate your help & I'm going to spread the word for y'all (both by word of mouth and online).

Thanx for your service!  Take good care & God Bless!
