Title: $160 hi limit thermostat on ge dryer WTF?
Post by: schleven on January 31, 2013, 09:56:11 PM
I have to go see a customer in the morning with a ge dryer no heat. model number DVL223GA0WW.  I like to be prepared and make sure I have the common things.  I looked to see what safety thermostat it uses and the diagram shows me this part number : WE04X10017 (http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/High-Limit-Thermostat/WE04X10017/771213)
ses My local parts store shows it is very expensive and i think it must be an error.  so I go to repair clinic and it is listed at $160!

Really?  looks like a regular old thermostat to me.

Whats the deal with that?

Wow, that has to be the most insane mark up I have ever seen on any part.

Maybe someday it will be cheaper for us to buy new appliances and part them out instead or ordering new parts.

The control stat is $80. Its the most basic dryer too.  Hopefully th igniter is the problem  :P

You could look for a generic L180 thermostat if nothing else. I don't see anything special with the WE04X10017 (http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/High-Limit-Thermostat/WE04X10017/771213)

Looking at the dryer, i figure it has to be a tstat, igniter, or coils.

Thats GE for you. Its common to have extra extra high mark up on their parts but that is an extreme case. For example, probe for GE oven-$100. Every other brand that appears identical in all aspects, $14. :D

I had a ge fridge that needed a defrost stat and it was 80 bucks. The exact same stat in a samsung bag was 12 bucks. I also found a samsung pump for a maytag washer that was exactly the same for 1/3 the cost. Crazy how different mfgs charge more for identical parts.

Since the dryer's made by Frigidaire, you should be able to sub it to the Frigidaire equivalent.

Here is a simple burner knob, which GE seems to have a particularly high opinion of.

Well it was the valve coil that was the problem, so I didnt need to worry about a $160 thermostat.

I went on a Frigidaire refrigerator in a rental this week. Needs a crisper drawer, 2 crisper drawer fronts, 2 door bars and 4 end caps. The parts alone are just shy of $300.

LG seems to be pretty reasonable on parts. Only a FEW exceptions. :D

Ratio of cost/products used on the GE and LG are very similar IMO. The ge is a molded plastic part ONLY where as the LG is put together in pieces with stainless screws and a premium finish. Both none the less still high...

Yes, them two stainless screws and premium finish can really add to the cost, lol...

speaking of repair clinic and dryer coils. They say that trying to test dryer coils with a multitester would be inconclusive. Is that true? This is an electric part correct?. Looking for continuity would be a waste of time.?

Got a link to where you read that?

By multi tester do you mean multimeter or some kind of continuity tester with just a light and/or beeper on it?

This video talks about checking a heating element to check continuity on a dryer heating element.
Dryer Heating Element Help Video (http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Heating-Element-Assembly/279838/2438#repairHelpVideoTabs)

I use a multimeter all the time to check continuity on dryer heating elements to see if they are bad or not.

when i say multitester i am mean a fluke digital VOM. I do not have a link i sent them a private message asking them what readings i should get on a meter for an ohms check and their response was testing the coils would be inconclusive.

Hmm, don't know why they would say that.
How did they suggest testing it then?

How do they suggest testing?..good question. I would see if i can pull up that message later but i think what they were trying to get at is just replace them.  I never got to the bottom of actually testing the coils or what the ohms reading should be. Oh, and yes I am a fluke fan:)

Anyway this topic has gotten way off topic. Please start a new topic with any further questions you have.
