LG 3850dd3006A - Dishwasher will not turn on
« on: May 16, 2012, 03:05:19 PM »
Hi all, this is my first post here.

We have a 3850DD3006A dishwasher that suddenly will not power on.  I've checked the breaker and it's getting power.  I checked the door switches and they both operate properly.

I removed the main circuit board and the power cable was stuck in place with what I would call "black goop".  On the back of the board, where the main power connector sits, the white plastic has partially melted.

Also there are 2, what appear to be, large capacitors that say 220uF 250v on them.  One of them is puffed out - BUT - it's only the sleeve that's puffed out.  I can feel the metal underneath it and it's not swollen at all.

However, I have no idea if I'm on the right track or not.  As far as I know it could be the power switch or something else entirely.

Can anyone help me troubleshoot this?

Thank you!

Paul

Hi Paul: Before you took the PCB out, did you check whether there was power going to it ?. Also you don't say if you have any lights on at all on the machine ?

There's power to the washer.  I wasn't sure how to check if there's power at the circuit board or not.  I had figured the door switches were the cause since they seem to be mechanical, but using my meter I was able to determine they're fine.

Honestly I'm not much on repairing electronics at all.  My main experience is in building and troubleshooting computers, so this is quite a bit out of my league.

Is there an easy way to test the circuit board or the front switches?

Thanks!

Paul

I don't think 3850DD3006A is the model number.
What is the model number on the model/serial tag of the dishwasher?
Hope you find our site helpful.

We looked everywhere and the only number we can find is that one.  The main circuit board is 6870ed9001A - not sure if that helps.

Thanks!

Open the door of the dishwasher.

On the *right* side of the *door*---there's a sticker.

Post the MODEL & SERIAL NUMBERS.

NOTE: If the right side of the dishwasher is blocked by cabinets/drawers in the kitchen (can't be seen)...

Use a mirror to read the numbers.

Early model Lg diswashers had a problem with a reaction between the inner door liner spray on tar like insulation and the wiring / insulation. "DEAD" was one of the most common symptoms of that fault. Check the wiring harness between the door panels starting from where it comes out from the bottom all the way to the pcb. Look for open wires and broken wires inside the insulation.

<<<We have a *LDS5811WW* dishwasher that suddenly will not power on.>>>

*****************

Remove the lower kickplate at the front/bottom of the dishwasher.

On the right side---there's a small TERMINAL BOX---remove the screw/box and verify 120 volts at the *black* and *white* wires. If either of these wires appear burnt/overheated (loose connections) disconnect power at the home fusebox/circuit breaker---and repair as needed.

Remove the front cover of the dishwasher (metal panel & plastic control panel).

Remove the large *white* plug from the MAIN BOARD---using the test meter---verify 120 volts at the *white* plug (not the MAIN BOARD itself).

If no voltage is detected at the *white* plug---replace both the NOISE SUPPRESSION FILTER and the MAIN BOARD.

NOTE: The NOISE FILTER is located at the bottom/right side of the dishwasher (small circuit board).

If there is voltage at the *white* plug---replace the MAIN BOARD only.

Ok where do I send the beer?

There were 2 wires in the tar thar had totally broken off and a third was starting to split.  Additionally the white power line had split in half at the bottom of the door and had been arcing quite a lot it appears.

My wife's very happy with me at the moment.

Thanks!

Paul

You have to isolate the wiring from touching the liner insulation to prevent it form happening again. I perfer to use rubbertex refrigeration pipe insulation but you can use thick cardboard as well. Wrap the harness in either and make sure to install an insulator behind the harness going to the door latch, dispenser and main pcb ( main control board ).
