Hotpoint (GE) Range-No Bake, No Broil
« on: April 20, 2012, 04:34:32 PM »
Have model RGB746GEN1 range, 10+ years old.  After pressing Bake or Broil, control panel activates, allows temp info input, but then the usual "click" is not heard and neither will start.  This started with Bake at first, could only get it started by turning on and off broiler and then trying oven again (coincidence?)  Now, neither will work.  Everything else on control panel works and range top works also.

The control is no longer available but you have a couple of options.  It sounds like you have bad relays.  You can order new relays from someplace like Mouser and solder them on. Or, you can have the board rebuilt by www.fixyourboard.com or http://www.corecentricusa.com/

Don't know yet,  if it's just 2 relays, I would really like to just replace those as I live on a fixed income and money is tight.  Have just started search for relays and no luck, no where.

Post any numbers you see on the relays you are looking for.
Maybe someone here can help you locate them.

Thanks.  The relays say:   Omron G5L-UA-006005,  24VDC,  COIL 24VDC,  CONTACT 5A250VAC, 5A30VDC.  Many parts for this range are discontinued, maybe there is a suitable substitute replacement relay?  Appreciate the help.

Looks like that relay is no longer available.  From reading your original post, I'm not sure you need relays.  You said it doesn't click, usually I find that the relay will click but will not switch on power.  You might have a cracked solder joint.  Get out your jeweler's loupe and inspect the solder joints.  Check especially around the transformer and relays. Or, just resolder everything.

If you do need a relay, you may be able sub a different relay.  You want the same footprint, the same coil voltage and the same or higher amperage rating.

Funny you should mention that.  I was just reading about how intense heat (ie: self-clean cycle) can cause solder to come off relay connection.  Also, I pressed Broil this morning, just for kicks, and it clicked and turned on.  It was my understanding that relays, once broken, stay broken.  This intermittent function is making me nuts.  I will give all the joints a good look.  Thanks

If you have self clean don't use that function. All kinds of crap happens after a self clean
