Kenmore Gas Dryer No Heat
« on: April 16, 2008, 05:56:18 PM »
This dryer will tumble and blow air but no heat. You can smell gas coming out of vent. The dryer partially dried for awhile. I would like to see a manual if possible. Thanks

I can't find the manual for that particular dryer, but it looks like one of the standard Whirlpool gas dryers.

Does the ignitor glow ?

Does the flame come on at all ?

Is there good air-flow out the back of the dryer vent

Was it clogged ?

If it partially dried for awhile, chances are you need a set of gas coils on the valve, a cheap and easy repair. When these fail, the burner may ignite once or twice, then later won't let the gas out as it should. If you want to look at a manual for reference purposes, I can offer you a similar model which has the same gas valve setup as yours. Download the manual below and scroll to the gas section within the document.

Whirlpool 27" dryer manual

Generally, this type of failure is associated with a blocked or improperly installed exhaust.

Yeah if the dryer can go one good time and then shut down and stop drying I have come across this before. You need to change these dudes:

I replaced coils first. Same problem. I also replaced the radiant sensor and that didn't work either. The dryer will ignite when first turned on cold. Then when it cycles off for a minute it might ignite second time, might not. After that it won't ignite at all. The igniter works fine. I didn't test the new parts before I installed them. Could it be the gas valve?

In situations like that, I usually have my voltmeter leads attached at the gas valve connections to monitor voltage when the unit won't ignite the second time. This tells a lot about what is going on...it may be a bad hi-limit or something upstream if voltage is not present. If voltage is present, you can certainly narrow it down to a bad ignitor or gas valve.

do you have 2 wires or 3 wires going into the burner assembly?

It turned out to be a bad igniter even though it glowed well. I payed for that lesson but I learned alot so it was worth it. I'm just starting out in this profession after 6 months of home schoolin so I have alot to learn. I really enjoy it. I wish I would have done this 15 years ago. No more punchin a time clock and making somebody else wealthy. "The more you do the same you get". This web site is a great training aid. I studied a course from Harry Raker and learned alot. He been doing this for 40 years and I can call him anytime for help but I always come here first. Thanks to everybody!

Well since you are learning I will give you a trick of the trade about these gas dryers. To check the the burner Assembly remove the 2 wires on the FLAME SENSOR.  With the dryer running and set on heat, carefully touch the 2 wires together(it could bite ya if you ain't carefull now) watch for the ignitor to glow, wait 20 seconds and separate the 2 wires. This will shut down the ignitor and allow the electricity to flood the magnets and open the gas gates in the valve.(The Ignitor robs the coils of their ability to open while it is glowing) The raw gas will come out and ignite. Get someone to unplug the dryer for you OR reach up and unplug the cord to kill power going into the dryer, to conclude this test. Do not let the wires from the flame sensor touch anything until power is disconnected or you will look like Burnt Toast  :tickedoff: :2funny: That is the old school way of checking the burner assembly.
