Spin cycle starts out noisy.

This is a direct drive machine model # lsr8244dz0
When the spin cycle starts a metallic noise is made. As the drum picks up speed the noise goes away. It stops and pumps ok. I removed the cabinet and bypassed the lid switch and listened for the noise. It is either coming from the clutch area or transmission area, but is hard to tell. The clutch felt warm after several times. Any other ideas and how can i tell if clutch is bad if I remove it? Should I just replace the clutch and try it?

Drop the motor/ tranny out of the unit and run it unattached to the drum to see if you can hear a noise.
