Maytag Top Load Washer- No Agitate

At the laundromat my father and I own, we had a Maytag Top Load Washer MAT12PDBAW (Dependable Care) that would not agitate. It would spin o.k. I tilted the washer back and removed the belts. I then tried to turn the large pulley on the end of the transmission counter-clockwise for agitate. It would turn smoothly then real hard, smoothly- then hard. Replaced transmission and it works as good as new!
