Frigidaire sxs clicking noise
« on: April 03, 2012, 02:29:03 PM »
Hello. My refrigerator stopped defrosting, the freezer was cold but the other side was hot. I replaced the thermostat and the timer. The heater checks OK, I can hear the fan by the thermostat. I cleaned the coils and the fan by the compressor. It runs gets cold for 3 hours and then it clicks and the compressor and the fan located by the compressor stops running. The compressor gets real hot.

Can the problem be that the relay switch has gone bad or something else? How to I take the switch off of this model? The model number is FRS24WNFW1. Thanks for your help.

Remove the relay from the compressor and look for signs of failure. Your compressor being hot probably means the relays contacts inside are welded together causing both the start winding and the run winding to both work simultaneously. Not good! This causes the compressor to shut down on overload.

Thank you for your fast response. Do the installation instructions come with this part? How do I remove the old part? I do not want to get shocked by the capacitor.

Not normally (directions), and after unplugging the fridge take out the screw you see in your picture and remove the clamp that is generally over the relay & overload, then a flat screwdriver to pry them off of the compressor (they slide off straight posts). The cap 'should' be mounted by a single screw and once unplugged should be discharged and not a problem.  If you are worried you can short them with a pair of insulated handle needle nose...

I was working on an ice box just recently and checked the relay. Took a few photos and posted em to appliancejunk.blogspot:

I can't seem to get the brown wire out of the part.  I will post a photo of what I am looking at. Please bear with me. I am not a guy. Thanks.

If you cain't get the brown wire off that might be on account of the part being fried or overheated from some sort of failure.

If it is the one I think you are talking about you can use a flat bladed screwdriver to pry up the retainer. Otherwise I'll wait for your picture. :)

Pictures attached.  Where is the relay? Where is the capacitor?  Do I need to disconnect the wire to access the relay? How do I discharge the capacitor? Where is the capacitor? Thanks again.

The capacitor is that black thingy attached to that relay/overload. It just shoves onto the side of the relay. Both look shot to me. Order a relay/overload and a new capacitor.

OK. Thanks, but if I can't get it off I won't be able to order anything, I will have to call a repairman.  So do I simply pull the capacitor off? ???  How do I discharge it first?  I am allergic to pain.  What is the trick to getting this wire out?

That capacitor will not hurt you.
If you have needle nose pliers, grip the wire close to the terminal end and pull hard.

Get mean with it and yank out that wire. No need for a service man. You got this. Easy peasy.
No need to even try and unplug the old cap as it is shot. You can clearly see it is bad.

Sometimes these parts get so hot when they fail, they melt together.  They can also melt the contacts on the compressor.  I just replaced a compressor on a fridge because that part burned the contacts all the way to the body.

The fridge was only four years old, and the Whirlpool said all they had to pay for was $350 labor.  All the parts were free, and they still bought a new $2000 fridge!  Sheesh!  I would have fixed it for $800 if I owned it.  Who has money to spend $1500 - $2000 on a fridge every time one breaks down?

Oh well, it's mine now.  They called wanting someone to haul it off, so I picked it up and added it to my collection.
