Today I took the hands on test for Whirlpool washers. My machine was bugged with 2 problems, both related. The complaint was it wont fill with water.
I checked the normal outside the machine stuff then went inside the machine. After a few minutes and some contiuity checks I found a the pink wire from the water temp selector broke, I fixed that and tested the machine. I now have cold water, no hot so I went back to the wiring diagram. I checked each wire in that circiut and all were good but between brown from the timer and and tan w/ red to the fill valve I should have had continuity in the heavy duty wash cycle, I didnt.
I jumped the hot fill valve and it started filling so I narrowed it down to switch #11 in the timer. Thats when I got stuck. I wasnt sure if the problem was the timer or the temp switch. I checked the temp switch and it was good. Instructor said ok youve found the problem circiut, youve narrowed it down to the timer, now how do you check contact #11 in the timer.
I was stumped then to because I hadnt got into a timer. He then explained out in the real world, the timer would be replaced. I pulled the cover off the timer and found electrical tape disabling #11.
Learned today dont second guess your meter and your ability to read a wiring diagram.
