Whirlpool Dryer hums then stalls - Part 2

Thanks for the replies - this is a great site.
I'm going with a new motor, but the rear drum bearing felt strip is worn in some places and I think I need to replace this as well.
Is this a nightmare to do?  From the pictures on the parts site, it comes with a tube of glue.  How is it adhered to the drum?


My dryer, about 10 years old, has started to shut down in the middle of the dry cycle.  I watched the excellent video on taking the dryer apart and took the thing apart.  I noticed that the rear felt bearing strip had a couple of worn spots.  I cleaned everything up, lubed the wheels, and reassembled it.
This helped for about a week, then it started again.

I notice that the dryer starts OK, and the drum turns pretty freely by hand.  At about 1/2 hour into the dry cycle, the motor starts to make a loud humming sound.  If you stop the dryer at this point, it will not restart for about 15 minutes.  The drum seems to turn freely by hand, though.

Any suggestions on ways to troubleshoot would be appreciated.

Sounds like the motor. If it won't start right away & just hums,more than likely motor

Sounds like the motor is getting to hot and kicking out on the built in over load.
Once the motor cools off again the overload resets and it runs again.

If this is the case the only repair would be to replace the motor.

After you let it run for 1/2 hour you could take it apart again and feel the motor to see if it is getting hot.

I bet you need to replace the start button. It probably is fried and won't let the motor get out of start. One sure way to tell would be to leave the door open. Let the dryer cool off and set the timer then shut the door. If the dryer starts by itself you have a bad start switch. I just thought I would throw that in.

you need a motor, as much as i dont like to disagree with other techs on the forum a stuck start switch can not cause your problem because the motor disengages the start winding after it begins to turn, rendering the start switch useless

you can run a dryer with a start stuck button for ever, i had one and ran it for years, on the up side when you opened the door with the basket in front of the dryer it would tumble most of the clothes into the basket for me
