Dryer smelling of hot plastic (insulation?)

Electric Kenmore model 110.62202100 just started strong hot plastic smell 10+ minutes into Auto-Dry cycle.  Air-Dry is fine (no smell), and I don't use Timed Dry.
 
Pulled rear panel and thoroughly cleaned dust out while looking for discolored wires or components.  All looks fine.  Did the same lifting the top lid.  Found nothing.
 
Machine works fine other than the smell.  Timer mechanism appears to advance o.k.   Is this a thermostat failure?  All input appreciated!

Did you remove the filter chute and check it for objects rubbing the fan blade?

The impeller and lower vent duct were badly gunked with lint and a little pet hair.   Ran two loads last night.  No smell!  I'll do the clean-out about every three years from now on.
