Humming Noise While Spinning
« on: April 15, 2008, 08:31:11 PM »
My washer is making a humming noise when it is spinning. I had a repairman out and he said it was a bearing and it would cost a bunch in labor to replace. Would that be the spin bearing and how hard is it to replace? What parts would I need to order? I am pretty good at fixing things and my neighbor the ultimate set of tools. I would be willing to try to fix it.

Hi Bubba,

Tilt your washer back, Take the belt off underneath and turn each pulley and see which makes the humming sound. I find things that get in the water pump can make it hum in agitate or spin or both.

The repairman took off the belt and turned the pulleys. It didn't make any noise. Let me restate what it sounds like on the spin cycle, it sounds more like a jet taking off. Thanks for the help!!!

That's entirely different from a "humming" noise bubba.

If it is a growling, howling noise that only gets louder the faster the tub turns, you indeed have bad bearings and a bad tub seal (hence the bearing failure). The tools required to do this repair are the upper seal tool, the spring removal tool  and the hub removal tool, costing more than the actual bearing kit needed to fix it. Your neighbor's tools, which are no doubt impressive, cannot help you much on this.

You should have a look at the Performa washer manual before deciding if this is within your 'realm of expertise' or not.

Thanks

I have a suggestion for you in the future...don't use the same repairman who told you it was labor-intensive. This repair takes about an hour if you already own the tools.

Most of the current brands of top load machines are fairly easy to repair and they all have different weaknesses that will show up after a few years of use. My advice is usually to find one that will be easy for you to repair later down the road, such as the Whirlpool or Kenmore lines. These tend to require the least amount of odd tools to repair, and it's rare to get an overpriced estimate on these common machines..

a frigidaire top load does not require a single specialty tool, not even a spanner wrench

i'm thinking through it and i bet if i wanted to take the extra time i could dismantle it with a cresent wrench, screwdriver and the one allen key for the bolt on the drive pulley
