Maytag Neptune MAH4000AWW - No Spin
« on: February 26, 2012, 11:22:24 AM »
Hello,

Last night my wife told me the washer isn't spinning.  I've read multiple posts of people with issues like this so far and am trying to diagnose what might be wrong.

She doesn't know if it tumbled or not and I haven't tested that with a load.  She doesn't know if it was making weird noises.  This means I'm skipping some tests that I should be doing.  If what I did below isn't enough to make a diagnosis, I will hook it all back up and start with the basic tests.

I don't have any type of OHM Tester.  I've disconnected the water hoses for now.   I opened the back and I can easily rotate the drum by hand.  The belt looks good to my untrained eye.

I've checked the R11 resistor on the upper control board and it's fine.  I looked at all the resistors and they are all fine.

I removed the door and front plate/panel of the washer.  I put the Timer Knob in the delay mode area.  I held the button to make it think the door was closed and pressed the Start Switch.  Both the Delay and On lights light up and nothing else happens.  I couldn't check for 120 vac between the L and N terminals because I don't have the tester.

I unplugged the washer, removed the JP4 Connector from the Motor Control Board, then plugged the washer back in.  I pressed the button to make it think the door was closed, then hit the Start Switch again.  The Timer Knob was still in the Delay area.  Both the Delay and On lights come on but nothing else happens.

I just went back and did the tests but with the door on and closed just in case that's needed.  No change.

Is this enough diagnosis to know that the Motor Control is bad?

Sounds like a bad motor control but you need to check for input power to be sure.  The replacement part, 12002039, comes with a new motor and control.

We just worked on this model last week, no spin problem. It could be the control board, but it pays to check the simple things first.  Get the manual and find the trouble flow charts.  You will need a volt-ohm meter.
Bye now

Thanks, gentlemen.  I appreciate you taking the time to answer.

I have the diagnostics sheet that was in the washer.  That's where I read to check to see if there is 120 vac between the L and N terminals.

I got a volt-ohm metre from a friend.  I'll test the vac between L and N.  If that's live, then does it mean that it's the motor control parts listed HERE and if it doesn't have 120 vac then the problem is that the Motor Control is not getting power?

If your timer is still in "delay", it won't spin.  You will need to slowly advance the timer to "spin".  Even then there will be a delay while the wax motor advances its shaft to activate a switch which starts the spin.

BEP is correctly following the tech sheet.  He has the washer in Delay mode and the JP4 plug disconnected at the motor control.  As long as it has 120vac to motor control, the motor should spin at 50 rpm.  Since it doesn't spin, we know it's bad.
