Should we service it or use it till it dies? (washing machine)

Hey everyone,
OPINIONS, please-- i just opened this account because i need to help my mom and dad

Kenmore 28622 
Washing Machine, 27-inch SAL
purchase date:   09july08


Today, a humming noise began and it's there whenever the auger is enabled.  So, when there's water in it during agitation, there's a humming.  When there's no water in it, and it starts the spin cycle, there's a humming.  It seems that it doesn't matter what the water level is.


Should we just run-this-thing-into-the-ground and keep using it (it IS working, albetit, with extra noise) or do you think that it MIGHT make sense for us to have it serviced?

I called Sears and they want to sell us a Master Protection Agreement for $100.

What do you think is best?.....
optionA:    Leave it be and just use it while it lasts
OptionB:   $100:   Sears Master Protection Agreement
OptionC:   $65 + parts & labor + whateverelse   with local repair person


I KNOW we can still use it, as is.  But, I'm just thinking of the possibility that "an ounce of prevention" might enable us to get a couplefew more years out of the appliance, you know?  Thanks for reading my first post.  I'm an network engineer-- if u have any related question, don't hestiate to ask me (i know compters as well).

First we need a complete model number.
There will be 3 digits a period and then the remaining numbers.
If the agitator is turning OK and the machine will spin OK,it mat be nothing to worry about.
A sound track posted here might help diagnosis.

Something is in the pump like, possibly a bra wire.  I'd fix it because it will tear up the pump impeller.  To test, remove the two clips and pull the pump away from the motor. If the sound is gone, you know it's the pump.  Very easy to do yourself, or hire a professional.  Either way, I recommend fixing it.

It DOES spin okay, but not so sure as far as agitation goes

Well, i WAS able to keep that machine out of service and today or tommrow i'm finally going to have some time to work on it again.

Oh yeah, i think i just might take that thing apart so i can take a close look at what's going on there.
