A helpful hint for Dishwashers that won't drain
« on: January 28, 2012, 08:55:34 PM »
Always remeber to check the disposer inlet for the drain line to make sure the person who hooked it up opened the inlet by poping out the plastic.  I spent two days on a dishwasher draining problem because the customer lead me to believe that the dishwasher has been hooked up for two years with no draining problem up until two weeks ago.  who ever hooked up the machine never opened the access to the disposer before they hooked up the drain line.  that dishwasher has never drained until now.  I think my leg was being pulled for whatever reason, I don't know.  Just figured maybe someone could learn from my mistake.

I find at least a couple of these a year.  When I look under the sink and see that shiny new disposal, I know exactly what the problem is.

The best advice for customers, dont listen to them. Ask them the problem and what it has been doing and go through your steps. I don't care if they told me that dishwasher has been there for 20 years and been fine, always check everything.

How about a stick-on plastic cutting-board foot that was the exact size to make it half-way down a drain hose before turning 90 degrees and plugging it up?

Oh boy, it was! I found it by disconnecting the drain hose at the unit and blowing into it; this, of course, after checking the sink tail piece for clogs.

Also the 'grease' plug from someone not draining the bacon grease, just throwing it in the dishwasher, or using the dishwasher to remove paper labels from jars.  ;)

Andy

People drain their washing machines through their food disposer in the UK?

Hi AJ: Sorry, that'll teach me not to speed read. Missed the bit about the Disposal unit :embarassed:, what I was thinking of was Multi waste outlet units where you can plumb the outlets from several appliances into 1 waste pipe. Have had several where people forgot to take out the plug as they connected a new appliance to the waste & then they scream at you on the phone because the washing machine etc won't empty & messed up their nice new floor.
