These Kitchen Aid dishwasher are a real headache when it comes to getting the door to shut properly. Especially on the dishwashers that have heavy custom wood panel doors. I have heard of techs doing all sorts of things to remedy the problem. Personally I stock ALL of the parts relative to the problem on my truck, so I can swap parts out until I figure out what does the trick.
The most common solution is replacing the door cables and related parts.
I have also solved this by replacing the door latch, and the door strikes. The Whirlpool part number for the door strikes are:
Bent Lip: 8574157
Straight Lip: 8580309
You might even be able to solve this by installing a new door seal, with the silicon/glue, and then wedge a chair against the handle for 24hrs, so that the glue will dry holding the door seal back. This makes it so the door seal doesn't put so much pressure on the door.
Other techs will bend out the stainless door down by the bottom portion of the door seal. They do this so the seal doesn't put so much pressure in that area. It's a bit drastic, but it works for them! I personally never do this.
