HE washing machines

I was looking at an old Whirlpool repair manual, which I found here on the forum.   It was dated in the '90s.   Under troubleshooting, I found "problem....damaged clothes"   solution...low water level, raise the level.


Seems like back when, they realized low water level was a problem.  Todays HE machines seem to have low water level as a FEATURE, and both from personal experience and reading on line sources, it seems that damage to clothing is a problem with the new machines.


I guess we have algore to thank for that???

The new low water machines do not operate on the same principle as the old ones. The old ones would fill to the top with 45 gallons of water and agitate for 14 minutes. These new one only put in around 5 or 10 gallons and continuously circulate the water over the clothes.
