Whirlpool washer agitates and drains, won't spin.
« on: December 29, 2011, 01:05:22 PM »
Ok, I have a Whirlpool top load washer, model number LSR8233JQ0, that is giving me some woes. It's right after Christmas and we are broke and do not have the money to buy a new one at the moment. I have not pulled it apart yet, but have watched some of the videos listed on here. Thanks for those.

Anyway, the washer stopped spinning. It still agitates and pumps the water out but will not spin. Earlier this week I could reach in and start the drum turning and it would continue to spin throughout the cycle, now it will not even do that. I can turn it freely but will not continue to spin during the spin cycle as before. I'm not sure what I should be looking for and would like an idea before I take it apart. Thanks in advance for your help.

Chris

If you can hear the motor running during the spin cycle I would take a look at the drive block it maybe stripped out.
I would remove the agitator, put the washer in spin and with the lid open watch the drive block. If you can something spinning around inside the drive block, but the block does not spin then the block is stripped out and needs to be replaced. Of coarse you will need to push the lid switch in with something to watch it with the lid open. :)

The drive block is under the agitator and is # 17 in this diagram.

This video will show you how to replace it.

This is the drive block for your model washer if you need to order one.

Check it out and let us know what you find.
It could also be the clutch slipping, but going by what you have told us I would look at the drive block first.

AJ, I am going to have to strongly disagree with you.  When a drive block goes bad on a Whirlpool washer, the first symptom the customer complains about is a "machine gun" sound when the washer stop's spinning.

I am going to have to say the Clutch is the culprit here because he said he could start the washer's spin cycle by hand.

2 things can cause the clutch to slip

1.   The clutch pads could be worn down and the jointing surface where the pads meet could be too smooth causing the pads not to grab and allowing pressure to be relieved from the brake.

2.  The Transmission could be leaking oil into the clutch, causing the clutch to slip.

Your probably right.  O0

It is really easy though to pull the agitator and check the drive block. I also mentioned at the end of my post that it could also be the clutch.

In any case I hope we hear back from RedneckDad with a update.

What you probably have is a broken coupler. She pumps ok so that tells me the lid switch is fine. Must be broken coupler.

But they said...

It still agitates and pumps the water out but will not spin.

It would not agitate if the coupler was broken.

Sometimes it will agitate but it won't spin because the coupler ain't completely gone. Seen it in my own machine. It would wash but not spin. I torn the whole thing apart before I found this:

I had the exact same issue with my Ultimate Care II. Sometimes it would spin and sometimes it wouldn't. Mostly due to how big the load of laundry was. I took the machine apart and thought it would be the coupler, but it was fine.

I checked everything from switch to transmission. Then I examined the clutch. All looked good, but I notice the inner ring would spin if I applied pressure with my fingers. The rubber pads inside the clutch had worn down and no longer held the spring and inner ring in place. The issue isn't noticeable unless you actually apply pressure to the the inside of the clutch assembly.

Hope that helps.

Your basket drive could also be weak, run it on spin with nothing in the unit, does it spin?
