MayTag refer/ Evap coils no ice?

Was looking at a MayTag refer MODEL# PTB2153GRW and cooling was poor but everything was working and coils were lint free. Pulled the panel off in freezer and noticed no ice on evap coils at all.  Toughed the Relay on compresser and everything stopped working. I'm thinking Relay but thought I'd check here. Thanks for any info.

If it rattles that is a good sign it is bad.

That is true.

Also if you have voltage to the start relay, but the compressor does not start then I would ohm the compressor out with a multimeter and if the compressor checked ok I would replace the start relay.

Thanks for the replys. I installed the new relay and it starting get cooler. Will have to wait until tomorrow to know for sure.

Well I thought all was well but it looks like I'm getting some frost on the evap coils but not enough. Freezer is around 10F and not getting any cooler. Note that everything is working but I guess not everything is working right. Also what ohm # am I looking for on the compresser when I test? I'm not a expert at this so some thoughts would be appreciated

If the compressor is running check your amp draw, that will help you know what is wrong. If anything ?

I left a T-stat in the freezer over night. Went and checked it today and the T-stat was at 0 F so Its running like it should. I guess it just took a while for it to get back to where it needed to be. The fridge was unplugged for a day before I started working on it. Thanks again for all the help.

They sometimes take a while to frost the evap completely on some of the Maytag units, glad you got it fixed.
