I like watching appliance repair videos from really repairs done by home owners.

I have replaced some start relays on a few Whirlpool compressors.
Is this a common problem with all refrigerators?

Yes. Their are multiple windings inside the compressor. That relay allows for power to be applied to all windings then it drops out half of them when the compressor gets up to speed. The points take a beating and over time the relay falls apart. Very common.

That relay switch is the reason I got started into appliance repairs.  I had a similar problem with my old refrigerator and I called a repair company to come out and fix it.  They came out and told me that they needed to replace the compressor.  They did and it still didn't work.  They never came back to fix the problem again.  I did a little searching with an appliance parts store and found that the relay switch was bad.  I replaced it myself and it worked fine.  Since then, I decided that this was my calling.  I have been in the field for 30 years now and still enjoy helping to this day.
