The best retainer is experience. Call on a HVAC company and ask to ride along on service calls to observe a field tech. The class info will make more sense when you see it in action.
Also, some very qualified people do not do written test well. Ask for a verbal test.

This is a cheap route to go, google hvac excellence tests questions and anwers the tests are all very standard and I bet you can find the answers to all of the tests with the questions.  Which test is the problem I will look to see if I still have mine so you can review it.  The biggest solution in my opinion is understanding the theory.

Testing a load is amperage.
Open circuit would be O volts.
A closed circuit will read voltage.

The best way to pass the test is to get some experience behind you. Down here guys that are in HVAC school get job offers to work with HVAC companys while still going to school 3 nights a week from 5 to 9 pm. Students ride with techs as helpers during the day and go to school at night.

Or you could just start a new topic in this forum and ask so we can all learn from the answers. ;)
