Whirlpool Shaft cam operation
« on: April 04, 2014, 01:35:25 AM »
Hi guys:
I wondering if somebody knows how the cam shaft operates.
First thing: I have replaced several Transmission neutral kits successfully.
Now: The problem was that washer at spinning time it was agitating at same time. I disassembly the gear case and i found out that the plastic cams at moment of release the pressure of the shaft spring , the two plastic parts (shaft cam) were not released, so I put other shaft from other transmission and it worked. Later I put the two plastic pieces (shaft cam ) from the transmission that was bad in the shaft that worked and it worked fine. This tells me that the problem is not on the two plastic pieces (shaft cam) , the problem i think must be in the shaft or in the small gear that goes over the shaft. I check visually the parts but can not see any difference except an small wear in the shaft that was giving me the problem. I am not sure if this is the problem or am I lost.  Does somebody knows how check this subassembly ? . thanks

Check the tabs on the shift actuator. It is the shift actuator that engages the cam to rotate it in one direction or the other depending on spin or agitation. In spin, the cam is rotated such that the ramps between the cam and cam follower are engaged which raises the cam follower which raises the agitate gear against agitate gear spring pressure. This releases the internal splines in the agitate gear from the splines on the agitator shaft so that the agitator shaft is now free to rotate independently of the agitate gear which is still driven back and forth by the connecting rack.

Those are the ones my comments are in reference to, the direct drive transmissions.
