Hi: GE uses hanger rods on most of their machines. They had a problem of creaking also and GE changed the material they used to make the plastic sockets they sit in. a fix at the time was to use vasoline to lubricate the parts. You could try this and see how it works for you. I used it on several machines I serviced and had no recalls for this problem. The problem with Kenmore front loader spider arms breaking was due to dissimilar metals joined together and the reaction this caused. Also the condition of the water and detergant used in the machine didn't help.

What detergents do the most harm to the spider arm? Liquid, powder, or any certain brand?

Not too sure, it all depends on the condition of your water (high chlorine level - PH of the water - hardness  all that stuff ) and the chemicals used to make the detergent ( chlorine base - Phsophate base - ....). Everything plays a part.
Here they get about 4 to 5 years out of them.
I just had to tell a lady that her LG Trom drum was let go today(4 years old)
Only ones I don't have much trouble with is GE and Frigidaire

I have a well so there is no chlorine in the water. I do use bleach now and then. My water is also relatively soft. I just switch around with detergents. Tide, Cheer, powder and liquid and All liquid now and then. Used to use All Free Clear  all the  time because of sensitive skin issue with a family member. My washer is a Maytag Neptune 4000 which I have had 11 years this Jan. Only 1 repair and it was in warranty. Had the control board/door lock issue. Been fine ever since(knock wood). Hope the spider keeps holding! Thanks for the info.

Isn't this a funny, i was just over at sears looking at new stuff & ran into this machine, told my helper don't worry about it nobody would ever pay that much for a washer.    Guess I'd better break out the training manuals. Could not believe the amount of odd stuff they're selling.

I saw on another site where Sears replaced the machine for him with a new front loading Electrolux . Says he is really pleased with it more so than the TL Kenmore(LG) made.
 
From what I have read, good thing he switched cause those LG top loads are flying apart in some cases.
