Noisy Washer--then locks up

Got a Kenmore washer model# 110.91521210 about 15 years old. Been running fine until today. While washing it started making a high pitch like sound(during rinse) then it just stopped. The motor kept humming but the machine seemed locked up. Turned it off and waited a while, tried it again. It agitated a few seconds(10-20 sec) then stopped again. It also has a hot electrical smell. I did get it to drain 3-4 inches of water out before it shut off again, so it will not work in any part of the cycle. I thought about the coupler being bad, but would that keep it from draining?

Probably something stuck in the drain pump. You will have to remove the cabinet. Pinch off the tube to pump hose. Remove the drain pump and clear it out. If you can not pinch off the tub to pump hose you will have to remove all the water before disconnecting the pump.

If the pump is ok I would check the capacitor
