GE Dryer Repair Help
« on: November 08, 2011, 04:13:25 PM »
model#  DBXR463ED2WW

I'm going to help someone out with their dryer in a couple of days.  I haven't looked at it yet.  I just want to get an idea of what it could possibly be before I get there.  Here's the person's complaint:

The dryer at first would turn on and then off randomly.  Now she can get the dryer to start for a bit and then the drum acts like it's going to move, but stops.  She says it makes an awful noise.

It sounds to me that maybe the belt is hung up.  Anyone else have any suggestions of what it could be?

Possibly the front drum bearing wore out and dropped on the frame, burning the motor up? Or the belt is broke. Most GE dryer have a switch on the tensioner to shut the dryer off when the belt breaks.

I would check the screws holding the shaft to the drum. If they came out the drum will drop and make a thrashing noise. Seen 2 in the last 6 months do that. Locktite the screws back in.

I worked on one of these dryers last summer and posted some photos:

Okay, I went to the house today.  They ended up buying another used dryer.  This time they got an Admiral dryer mod# ADE7000AYW .  Thing is, they were having basically the same problem with the newer one.  It would start up run for about 10 seconds and then stop.  The owner said the had to take the cord off of the old dryer since their outlet was a 3 prong.  I checked the cord for continuity.  The cord was bad.

I also got to take a look at the GE.  The front drum bearing was tore up so badly that the drum cut through the door.  So the GE had both a bad cord and front drum bearing.  They are letting me have their GE.  Thanks for your help!

It is quite possible the drum was causing excess strain overloading the motor and in turn melting the cord. See it all to often. Thanks for the update.
