Outdoor BBQ Grill

This is what happens when you buy a cheap BBQ grill.  According to the customer, it was only 4 years old and was purchased from Lowes.  I quoted the customer about $500.00 to replace the burners and clean it up to work decently but they declined since they paid less than $500.00 for the whole unit.


Over the years, I have found that people who cover their grills tend to have more problems that those that don't cover them.  In my area, when covering the grill, the moisture gets trapped inside and corrodes the metal parts more quickly. 


The customer declined the estimate and paid my $80.00 service call.  I took pics for all to see this.

Do you work on a lot of grills?

I have been asked quite a few times whether I work on grills and tell them it's usually more expensive for me to fix than to buy a new one.  I did fix one for a guy in my business group by explaining to him to take the regulator off take it to a big box store and ask for another one.  Should I be turning these jobs down?

Since not a whole lot of people work on them, I never turn those jobs down.  They're basically old fashioned stoves with a modern twist.  They're easy to work on and the most lucrative.  I usually work on the higher end stuff but when a midpriced version comes around, I will pick up on them as well.  My most busiest time with grills in the spring and early summer.


You should do them, especially the built in models.  Sure they're dirty but the money is still green and I usually get around $200.00 plus parts+markup to service them.

Sound's like I should re-think my position.  Do you get your burner's, diffusers, etc. from the big box store's or order them?

I usually have to order them.  I simply look online who sells the product line and get a price.  It takes awhile to get but it's worth it.
