A customer called me about her Maytag washer not spinning very fast. It would spin fine for maybe 1 or 2 washes and then it wouldn't spin... the problem was erratic. I removed the front panel, lifted the lid and removed the tub top. The first thing I did was take a metal clothes hanger, stretched it out straight and made a hook at one end. I ran the clothes hanger all the way around between the tub and spin basket and found a sock that was between the two. After removing the sock and visually inspecting the transmission, motor, pump, etc. I put the tub top, front panel and lid back together and ran through a complete wash cycle with a load of clothes. Everything is working fine now. I called the customer later this evening and she has washed several loads of clothes without any further problems. That one sock was causing enough drag to prevent the machine from spinning up to speed.
