I don't know of anyone around here who would test the motor for me.  I may just try replacing the capacitor if they don't cost too much.

What is the model number of your washer?

But would a bad capacitor cause the motor to smell and eventually smoke?

Motor does not turn by itself on Spin but will start spinning if I manually turn it.  Can't test Agitate.

If it will go when you spin it then I highly suspect that capacitor.

You cannot tell by looking at it if it is bad. If you short it between the terminals and it snaps or pops it is good. No snap no pop it is bad.

If the cap was shorted it would throw the house circuit breaker.

It doesn't spark or snap when I connect poles.  Could I have done something in my clutch replacement that could cause it to go bad?  It may sound like a silly question but it seems too coincidental that the capacitor went out days after I replaced the clutch.

You might have something binding. You can check to correct operation of a tranny using a drill:

This video shows how it all works

I tested the tranny with a drill and it seems to work properly (like in the video) and without any uneven resistence or stops.

Could there be a short in the washer's electrical system?  causing the capacitor to go bad?
