spin problem

If he replacing basket drive with each clutch I think he is gouging folks. I have NEVER seen a bad basket drive yet. I have had to remove them and clean em up if they been sitting in the yard a while but never have I had to replace one.

Just finished replacing clutch and running a load of laundry.  I torqued one of the motor mounting bolts off  but hope the remaining 2 hold up for at least a little while.

I did notice a slight "clunk" when it shifts gears from one phase to another, i.e. shifting into rinse mode.  I hope that is the new clutch breaking in?  I don't recall if the old one made the same sound.  Otherwise everthing seems to be working.

If it was just a slight clunk I would not worry about it.

I replaced the clutch and it was working again but would hear a "clunk" when it was shifting gears from agitate to spin.  After about 4 uses, I started smelling a burnt plastic smell and on the last use it stopped spinning at all and just makes a lound humming sound.  Motor burned out?  If it did, what could cause that?

Your capacitor could have blown it's top:

Checked capacitor.  Looks good by my eye.  Doesn't look like the pictures of a blown one.

Remove the motor from the tranny and test it on the floor.

I got this old control off of a leaky washer years ago. I use it to check motors.

Nope.  Doesn't work, just get the hard buzzing sound.  Is the motor shot?  What could cause that?  I just replaced the clutch with a new one - could I have installed the clutch incorrectly?  If the motor is shot it looks like just buying new is the best option.

When you have the motor on the floor and it's buzzing can you spin the shaft of the motor to get it running?

Yes, I can get it spinning but slowly and it keeps humming.

Unless you have some kind of bad connection on the motor plug I would say the motor is bad, what do you think JW?

As it's humming carefully wiggle the wire harness plug on the side of the motor to see if it kicks in and runs.

Wiggling the wire harnass doesn't seem to affect it.  I can set the motor spinning properly with my hand (no humming) but it won't start up by itself, just hums and eventually smells like burning.

The capacitor is used to help start the motor, could be a bad capacitor yet even if it looks good.
How about the connection on the wire harness that plugs into the capacitor are they clean looking?

Could you remove the capacitor and take it to a shop that could test it for you?
The capacitor should say on the side of it the range it should test in for it to be good.

I really like being able to check capacitors with my multimeter.
What is the reading on the side of your capacitor?


I have a couple extra used capacitors around that read 189-227MFD 110VAC part # 357021 like the one I'm testing in the photo.

I don't know of anyone around here who would test the motor for me.  I may just try replacing the capacitor if they don't cost too much.
