spin problem

I have a Kenmore washer model no 110.28522700 that has some kinda spin problem.Some times it will spin ok,and then sometimes you have to reach inside and start it to spin,by turning the basket.What do you guys think is wrong with this thing,and how can I fix it?

Same problem with no-spinning.  Here is what I know/checked:

Motor coupling is in good shape.

Motor runs, clutch spins.  See a little oil spun in a line on inside of cabinet but don't see any leaking at tranny seal.

I see a "loose" foam/rubber kind of ring (maybe 5" diam.) resting on the cowling-like part above the clutch.  Can't figure out where that is supposed to go and haven't read about it around here.

Took agitator off, ran spin and can see "drive shaft" spinning.  Can get tub to spin a little if I manually help it.

Checked agitator top (cam) and nothing appears broken or worn out.

Can't tell if drive block is ok - need spanner wrench to fully inspect.  Can't tell if brakes work properly.

How can I tell if it's just the clutch?

I have pics of clutch and underside of tub but can't figure out how to post them.

It's your clutch.  If you have to manually spin the basket to get it to spin or if you can stop the basket with your hand it's your clutch.

And that loose foam rubber kind of thing is there as a sound damper.

I learn something new every day.  Do I buy the whole clutch assembly, just the clutch, also the Band and Lining?

I also read on another site that a responder was replacing the basket drive whenever he replaces a clutch because it he says it will go out soon after the clutch.  The basket drive is around $135 so I may just go new if I have to replace than AND the clutch.

I'd say this responder doesn't know what he's talking about.  The basket drive is just the spin tube with the brake attached.  I have never seen the brake go bad and I have worked on literally thousands of these. The only times I've seen a bad spin tube is when the drive block loosens up and bends the ears on the top of the tube.
