Kitchenaid Dishwasher kudc20cvss makes an amazing noise

Hi,

We have had this dishwasher a little over a year now. We made a service call on this unit because it started making an awful noise while it was still on warranty. I would open the door when it was doing this and there was no water in the unit. It appeared to clean the dishes, and contained a lot of steam. Closing the door again, this noise would continue.

Service cleaned the food chopper and it seemed to be ok for a bit. But the noise continued. Another service call and another look at the device. They had no idea what was causing it.

By now, its off warranty. And of course KitchenAid will not cover labour even though they never solved the problem. I will never buy KitchenAid again.

So, finding articles on this forum and elsewhere. I removed and inspected the food chopper. It was clean. I reinstalled the same chopper. And it sounded fine. Now 10 washes later and the noise returns.

So, do I replace the chopper? Or is there something else going on?

It seems to make this noise near the end of the wash.

Any ideas?

Its been my experiance that if everything in the sump is clean and everything at the chopper is clean, and the noise is at the very end of the cycle, its somthing in the drain pump. Kitchenaid can cover it, you just need to be the squeeky wheel they dont want to listen to.

I would think it's the wash pump motor just because I replace so many of them.  But the noise is not usually intermittent like you're describing.  If it does turn out to be a bad pump motor, you should be able to get Kitchenaid to replace it under warranty. Can you post a video or recording of the noise?

It was this video that lead me to investigate the food chopper.

That sounds like something hard lodged in the chopper.  It's a fine screen so whatever is in there will be hard to see.  You could try removing the chopper and start it up.  If the noise is still there, it has to be a bad wash pump motor.

That was my thought based on the previous googling. We are diligent about clearing plates  before they go into the machine. Last time I took it apart to look at the chopper it was clean. Now that I write this, I'll bet when I take the chopper out I'll find something.

But removing the chopper completely is a good idea. If the noise returns then it has to be something else.

Last time I looked at the chopper I noticed that the mechanism was loose. Not knowing this was normal or not I simply replaced it. When I say loose I mean the blade seemed to be very loose from the screen. Is this normal?
