what is the definition of second stage heating in laymens terms

The first stage is the heat pump in its regular mode. The second stage is the electric back up heat.

2nd stage heating with a furnace is different in that the 1st stage starts out at about 70% capacity. On milder temperatures that is sufficient and saves fuel cost. As the temperature outside drops the furnace senses and ramps up to 100% capacity.
Older and lower end furnaces start and end at 100% capacity.

Keep It Simple Student    Diagrams are like a road map with a starting point and a finishing point. Example Electricity enters through the hot line (L1) through the conductor to the load (motor, refrigerator etc.) out through the neutral line (N) (120 Volt) back to the supply.
In between there are switches in series with the load to turn it on and off.
