Whirlpool Ultimate Care Washer Won't Spin Correctly

I just had a repair tech out who found two issues with our 12 year-old washer and I need to decide what to do. First, it's important to know that the washer was really only needed for another two years. After that we're moving to a place where the appliances are all provided and maintained. Thus buying a new washer would be a last resort.


The tech said:


1. The agitator is stripped. It sort of spins but stops if you hold it.


2. The motor is overheating and shutting off. I can get a load done, usually, but not a big load and not two in a row. The burning smell starts right away when it spins.


Can these issues be fixed? he said it would be $380 to just replace the motor. At that point I can get a new Whirlpool for $394 from a local appliance store.


Are we simply out of options?

Of coarse they can be fixed. Anything can be fixed it's just a matter of how much you want to spend on the repairs.

I looked all over the unit and couldn't find a model number anywhere front or back. It's definitely an Ultimate Care with three knobs. Bought it around 1999/2000.


If you know of where we can find that model number let me know or I could take a picture of it.

need model # to look up prices, call the company that worked on the unit, if he gave you an est. he has to have model number listed somewhere.

Found it. It was under the lid hing covered in dried detergent gunk.

Looks like a good price but how much shipping is involved? Will they take it back no questions asked for up to a year from now?

Shipping is more with this discount price and I'm not very comfortable with the picture or any guarantees, etc. So APP looks like a go for me. If it helps you guys too I'd do it regardless of the cost. Thanks. Now I just wish I could have figured this out before the PSE&G guy charged me $125 for the visit. <grin> I wasn't sure how to describe the issue properly so that's on me. Still cheaper than a new washer that will go to waste and be a hassle in the end.

Just a quick note. My repair went nearly flawlessly and the washer is so much better than its been in years.

Two items:

1. There was something not covered in the video and that was an extra cylinder part with two wire connections that needs to be unscrewed from the motor and then put back.

2. The motor is now discontinued from Whirlpool and Appliance Parts Pros originally showed it as out of stock but says that was an error but that now they will be running down so the clock is now officially counting down on this.
